Bowtech, where did it start?

Tom Bowen

Mr Tom Bowen (1916 – 1982) developed his technique, now known as The Bowen Technique or Bowen Therapy during the 1950's in Geelong Victoria.

In spite of having no formal training in any modality, Mr Bowen was credited with having treated some 13,000 clients per year at the 1975 Victorian Government inquiry into Alternative Health Care.

How does it work?

Simply put Bowen appears to initiate the body's own ability to heal itself. Gentle moves over muscles, ligaments and tendons appear to set up a vibrational energy that starts the self healing process.

Recent studies indicate that the Bowen moves affect:

  1. The stretch reflex actions of the muscles
  2. Joint proprioceptors
  3. Fascia
  4. Segmental viscerosomatic spinal reflexes
  5. Acupuncture points and meridians
  6. Harmonic vibration
  7. Lymphatics
  8. Detoxification

Who is qualified to teach Mr Bowen's work?

Tom's Boys

Following Mr Bowen's death in 1982 and as none of the other 'boys' appear to be willing to teach the public, Ossie commenced teaching in Perth (1986) and then formed the Bowen Academy of Australia. Some gifted students of Ossie's have been given additional training and now are commissioned to teach the Bowen Technique.

Is it difficult to learn?

No. Ossie's notes and interpretations have made the course both easy to teach and relativately easy to learn. Students without any previous "hands on" experience very quickly pick up the work. Check the course description and note how most procedures are repeated in subsequent lessons.

What Bowen isn't

Not Massage, nor Acupressure, nor Chiropractic, nor Physiopherapy, or even Neuromuscular Re-Education; it's not Directional Energy Work, but has some similarity with some of Trigger Point Therapy.

It's not even Fascia Release or Lymphatic Massage or Emotional Release Modality.

Bowen has some connection with many of the points and places that are effected by the above, but Bowen is uniquely unique!
